Resize Divi's Main Background Image

Written by Dan Mossop

Here's a guide on how to set the size of the main background image in the Divi Theme.

Enabling a background image

To enable a background image in the Divi Theme, go to the "Divi > Theme Customizer > General Settings > Background > Background Image" option. Click on the "Select Image" button to upload or choose an image from the media library. You can also set additional options such as background repeat, position, and scroll behavior.

The main background image is often hidden by the backgrounds of Divi Builder sections, so on many sites it won't actually be visible. However, there are times when it can be useful. For example, if you have transparent backgrounds on your sections, the main background image can be visible through those sections. Additionally, if you are using our Divi Transitions plugin, you can fade to the background image on page transitions.

Using the "Stretch Background Image" option

In the "Divi > Theme Customizer > General Settings > Background" section, there is an option called "Stretch Background Image." Enabling this option will stretch the background image to cover the entire page. However, this option provides limited control over the size of the background image.

Setting the background image size using CSS

If you want more precise control over the size of the main background image, you can use custom CSS. Here's an example CSS code snippet that can be used to manually set the size of the main background image:

body.custom-background {
    background-size: 1000px auto !important; /* Set the width to 1000px, maintaining the aspect ratio */
    background-position-y: 100px !important; /* Optional offset from top of page */
}

The above CSS code sets the background-size to a width of 1000px and auto for the height to maintain the original aspect ratio. Please adjust the width value to your desired size.

The CSS code also sets an offset from the top of the page (100px in this case), which can be useful when trying to position a resized image, but is entirely optional.

Smooth Page Transitions for Divi & Extra!

Enhance your Divi site's visual appeal with the Divi Transitions plugin. Create elegant page transitions using seamless fade, zoom, and wipe effects, which can beautifully display your main background image. Perfect for adding sophistication to your site without slowing it down.
